Black Hut Design wants everyone to be able to browse the shop, find craft shows, and get in touch, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification, voice control, or other assistive technology.

Our goal

This website is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, the standard most widely used to measure web accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I am committed to keeping it that way as the site changes.

What has been done

  • Every page can be used with a keyboard alone. There is a visible focus outline and a “Skip to main content” link at the top of each page.
  • Drop-down menus open from the keyboard and close with the Escape key.
  • Pages use headings and landmarks so screen reader users can move around quickly.
  • Form fields have labels, required fields are marked, and errors are announced.
  • Text and button colors meet contrast requirements.
  • Product photos have text descriptions, and purely decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Pages reflow for phones and zoom, and animation stops if your device is set to reduce motion.
  • Craft show maps are labeled and load only when you ask for them. The address and a directions link are always shown as text.

Known limitations

  • The embedded map comes from Google and may not be fully accessible to every assistive technology. Each show’s address, date, and time are also given in plain text.
  • Some craft show flyers are pictures that contain text. The date, time, and place are always written out next to each flyer.
  • Some product photo descriptions are brief.

How this was checked

The site was checked with automated accessibility testing and by hand using keyboard-only navigation, zoom, and color-contrast measurements.
